What is the safest type of and way to solder?

For art projects like stained glass, not electrical work.
I don’t want to use lead solder and am just wonder if there is a feasible alternative out there. Specificially are there any artists out there who do solder and what can you tell me about solder safety?

Thanks in advance :)
I’ve actually had a job soldering when I was younger, but the extent of their safety protocol was to use a special fan that filtered and blew the air up and away from you. However, I am worried about actually handling the solder during the process and then later handling the finished product with exposed solder work.

Is it the solder itself that you are concerned about, or is it the soldering process? I don’t know about alternative materials, but there are a few easy ways to minimize your exposure to the lead fumes that come from soldering.

o Solder outdoors or in a well ventilated area
o Set up a fan blowing away from your project area

I’ve also seen people who use shop vacs with long hoses to pipe the fumes away from the project area.
